Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (called “HBO” or “HBOT”) involves lying in a large cylinder shaped clear chamber while breathing in 100% pure oxygen that is pressurized in the chamber. Your doctor may order hyperbaric treatment for many problems, but for patients with diabetes or chronic bone infections that have not healed with standard treatment, hyperbaric oxygen therapy may help avoid more serious complications and help heal your ulcer.

Treatments with HBO are usually once every day except for weekends, and the treatment lasts about 2 hours. A hyperbaric technician administers the treatment with a doctor, nurse practitioner or physicians assistant immediately available at all times.  If your doctor prescribes HBO, you will be given a full explanation of the treatment and what to expect.

Contact Amputation Prevention Centers of America for more information about HBO.
